Recovering Files

Stock photo don’t open your drive

I have not posted in a few days mostly because most of my time has been spent trying to recover data from my NAS. While I still don’t know what caused it to fail, I have a better idea of what is wrong with it. The system has two 8 terabytes (TB) drives setup in what is called Raid 1 which simply put means that when something is written or deleted from one drive that action is mirror on the other drive.

Well, that is what it should have been doing. It turns out that the mirror drive has no data on it at all and that for some reason the NAS thinks the drives are 115.45 Petabyte (PB) drives, A Petabyte is 1,024 terabytes (TB) and there are no drives even close to that in size with the current largest drive on the market is 18 terabytes (as of 2022).

The recovery is going slow, and I am sure I will not recover everything, but as of this morning the most important files have been recovered. Replacement parts should be here this weekend.

First Day of Spring?

It is the first day of Sprint Yeah!!! Oh wait it is only 32°F (0°C) outside. The roomer is we will be almost 60°F (15°C) later today so I am hoping to spend a little time outside later today. I really need a relaxing afternoon flying one of my drones, because it has been a crappy week.

This week I had so much that I wanted to get done, but my back as been killing me all week, so I have made almost no progress on anything. To make things worse my NAS died on Friday. It is March and we always have high winds at the end of winter in this part of the country and with above ground powerlines in this part of town this leads to power flickers. So, I am guessing the NAS took a surge. I stupidly did not have it on a UPS.

I think I am going to be able to recover most of the data from the drive, but I really did not need the cost and loss of time recovering data and rebuilding the NAS right now. That said I need files from the NAS to work on other projects.

OH CRAP!! I wanted to include an image with this post, but they are on my NAS.

Escaped my dungeon for a while

I don’t leave my house very often; in fact, I don’t leave my bedroom / office / cell very often. It is not that I don’t want too, I just at this time I don’t have anywhere else in the house I can sit on except the side of my bed and it is hard for me to walk and impossible for me to drive. However, today I have escaped, and I am out running errands with my dad.

It feels great to be out, even if things are not going very well for both of us. We had to go to three auto supply stores to find a battery for his van and my photo order from Walgreens that I received an email saying was done had not even started and could not printed until much later today. I couldn’t get back out, so I had to cancel the order.

All that said I am really enjoying being out and really enjoying the weather improving.

Frustrating Morning

Not final design

I am working making buttons for a YouTuber named Ken Heron to give away as gifts while he is driving with a group of fellow drone pilots from Chicago to Santa Monica following the old Route 66. I stumbled across Ken Heron’s channel while looking for information on getting my FAA Part 107 Certification and I quickly became a fan.

I am using his artwork, so I only had to make a few minor changes and set them up for printing, but this has not gone very well. The magenta cartridge on my Canon ImageClass Color Laser printer is randomly dumbing toner on print jobs (lots of toner), even if it is just a black and white print. I don’t have a spare in stock, but I want to get this job at least started today. So, I decided to have the printed at the local FedEx Store and I would just need to cut them and make the buttons. Simple Right? Well that too has been a real pain in the ass. Their website sucks!!!!

I did get an email saying they received the order so I have my fingers 🤞🏼crossed that the print job it will turn out right.

UPDATE:

Well, they printed my order. It was printed on card stock which I don’t think is going to work. I guess I will find out later tonight.

Should I recover older posts?

While I am not able to recover the posts from my last webhost, I do have an achieve of the older version of this blog from the webhost I was using before switching to the one that that vanished. Right now, I am leaning toward not recovering the posts. If I am going to do a “restart” of my life I should go ahead and stare fresh with the blog. That said, I can’t ignore the many mistakes I have made in my past.

I need to write a post soon explaining what I mean by “restart” when I am talking about my life. After all you can’t restart or reset your life like you would in a video game. I just need to make things better.

No Sleep Again

I have a lot of issues when it comes to sleep, and I am almost always tired. I have sleep apnea and I use a cpap, but I don’t think that it is the sleep apnea is the issue. I just can’t turn off my brain. It is like it is going a million mph and I can’t get it to stop. To make things worse I have started having nightmares again.

I have a lot I want to get don’t today, but between being very tired and in pain the weather I have a feeling it is going to be a shitty day.

Restarting..

I have restarted this blog a half dozen times or more over the years, but this is the first time I have had to do it because the webhost vanished from the internet. Stupidly I also used them to back up the content of the site so basically lost everything. I was not incredibly happy with the blog as it was anyways, so it is not much of a loss.

The ironic thing is that I decided that with the world finally starting to get back to normal after the Global Covid-19 pandemic, well excluding Russia invading Ukraine (March 2022), I was going to restart my life in 2022. I need to get my life under control. I need to improve my health. I need to find my Raison D’être. So, I guess having to restart everything from scratch with the blog is not a particularly a bad thing.

Last day

A few weeks ago, I decided that on February 1st, I was going to start making a lot of changes in my life. Including eating better, phasing out diet soda, getting more exercise,  studying every day for my FAA Part 107 Pilot certification (Drone pilot), and more that I will list soon.

To get ready for this, I set a deadline of January 31st to get a lot of little projects done, including cleaning and downsizing to make more room in my bedroom/office. Well, that deadline is today, and I am not ready.

I did get a lot done, but I still have a lot more to get done, so I am going to give myself an extra day to work on my room. However, that is not an excuse not to start the other things.
